About Contemporary Southwest Homes

The Contemporary or Modern house can be defined as a personal statement expressed through nearly any combination of layout, geometry and materials. Current definitions of contemporary may include regional styles that are less academic with a loose interpretation of the traditional details.

Contemporary southwest style homes have many of the same features as the traditional southwest homes. Generally the materials are used in a more modern way, or in a contemporary style. The contemporary style homes may still have adobe, vigas, latillas and stone; however the materials are not used in a rustic manner. They are typically stucco and may be accented with pueblo style features or red tile roofs.

Southwest Contemporary Distinctive Features

Distinctive Features:

Increase Functionality – Contemporary house designs offer soaring ceilings and a timeless simplicity that works well for both families and individuals. Contemporary house plans also emphasize open, flexible spaces, allowing the homeowner to tailor the home's functionality.

Modern Finshes – Modern or “industrial” mixed materials such as concrete, vinyl, and glass are used extensively throughout the home. Contemporary house plans are perfect for those who want to make a clean break from the past and embrace pure modern style.

Low–Pitch Roof – The wide eave overhang, flat or low pitched roofs with broad, low front-facing gables attribute to the industrial feel of the Contemporary home. Steeped in simplicity the bold boxy exterior features exposed supporting beams, contrasting wall materials, and unusual window shapes accentuating the modern feel of the home.
